Golf

Golf the way its meant to be played...

Our 18-hole championship par 71 course was completed in 1961 and has matured into one of the most popular in the area. The course measures 6,815 yards from the championship tees. Greens and tees are bent grass, while the fairways are comprised of rye.

International earned the distinction of being ranked in the Virginia State Golf Association Foundation’s top 25 golf courses in the State of Virginia, and was awarded the Best Golf Course in Fairfax for 2015, 2016 and 2017 by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Association.

Getting tired of hitting golf balls off of mats at public golf courses?  International's facilities include a recently renovated practice facility, which includes a 6,000 square foot putting green and grass tee driving range. We also just added an indoor Trackman golf simulator for your "bad weather" practice regimen.  The Club’s golf activities include a full schedule of tournaments and special events.

There are programs for Men, Retired Men, Women (9-hole and 18-hole groups) and Juniors. International participates in various inter-club programs as well.

Hole #1 - This par 5 may be reachable for some long hitters. A pond can come into play off the tee on the left. Play your drive down the right center of the fairway. A well played second shot will leave the player about 100 yards for their third. The green is well bunkered, and plays uphill for the third so play a little more club than you might think.

Hole #2 - This mid-length par 4 requires an accurate tee shot to have a chance for a birdie. Avoid the two water hazards on the left, which are both reachable for longer hitters off the tee. Play your drive down the right center of the fairway to have a short to mid iron into the gently sloping green. Avoid going over the green on your approach shot, or you will have a difficult attempt to get up and down to save your par.

Hole #3 - A wide fairway is an inviting target so pay attention to the pin location for the best driving strategies. Avoid the bunkers located on both sides of the fairway as well. Pins set on the right side of the large green are very difficult to attack from the right side of the fairway. It can be difficult to get close to the pin on your approach shot, depending upon where the pin placement is.

Hole #4 - The wind creates a par 3 with multiple personalities here. Wind from the north or west is blocked by trees so club selection is difficult. The green slopes more to the front than it appears so chips or putts across the putting surface are hard to get close.

Hole #5 - This is the shortest par 4 on the course. But don’t let the waterfall lull you to sleep! A precise tee shot to the right of the fairway avoids two water hazards on the left, leaving a mid to short iron in for the second shot. This two tiered green must be managed gingerly since long putts or chips are difficult on this sloping green.

Hole #6 - International’s signature hole. Many hearts (as well as clubs) have been broken here. This is one of the more difficult holes on the course. It requires an accurate tee shot – hitting the right center of fairway here is a must! Water is directly in front of the green, offering few “bail-out” options for the weak of heart. Watch the out of bounds behind the green. The green is large and is sloped from back to front.

Hole #7 - The elevated tee boxes offer great views of this difficult hole. The longest par four on the course requires two good shots to hit the green. Your drive must go over a lake that empties into a creek that runs the length of the hole on the left. Avoid the left side or you might go in the creek, and any approach shot there is blocked by trees. The creek also cuts across the fairway on your approach shot. This hole has a large, well bunkered green that is very difficult to read.

Hole #8 - Club selection at this mid length par 3 is difficult because you are generally hitting into the wind. Play too far right or left and the golfer finds sand. Too deep and they will have a difficult downhill chip to the hole. Smart golfers play to the middle and hope for a two putt par.

Hole #9 - This par 4 requires a good drive off the tee. Avoid the left side of the hole. Play your drive down the right center of the fairway, since the fairway should feed to the left. A well played second shot will leave the player with a good birdie opportunity. The green is well bunkered, and plays slightly uphill so play a little more club than you might think.

Hole #10 - The back nine welcomes golfers with a beautiful but demanding hole. A dog leg left par 4 and a severely, sloped fairway make second shots difficult to this large green. Big hitters can cut the corner of the dogleg off the tee. But avoid going out of bounds on the left.

Hole #11 - The shortest par 3 on the golf course plays both down hill and down wind. A generously sized green will allow many golfers the opportunity at a birdie putt. But be careful! There are a number of difficult pin placements that could stretch that birdie into a bogie.

Hole #12 - This short par four requires an accurate tee shot to reach the generous landing area. Play your tee shot to the left side of the fairway. The second shot must avoid the bunkers around the green. A large green makes three putting a possibility.

Hole #13 - The tee shot on this long dogleg right par four is best kept to the left of the fairway to avoid trees that block any approach shot. A shot lost right off the tee faces a tough angle into the green from a treed area. A two tiered green makes it difficult to get shots close to the hole.

Hole #14 - If you have the big drive, you may want to try and unleash one here. Play to the center of the fairway off the tee of this gently sloping par 4. If you succeed, you will face a short to mid iron in to a very large green that is surrounded by bunkers.

Hole #15 - This hole is the first of two back to back par fives. The tee shot on this par five is best kept just to the right of the fairway bunkers. Only the longest hitters can reach this green in two, and they must avoid a creek in front of the green to do so. A well bunkered green is narrow from front to back, making shots to the back hard to hold.

Hole #16 - Trees line both sides of the entire length of this long par 5. A generous fairway allows you to “grip it and rip it”. Fairway bunkers guard the approach shot, and can make second shots a little intimidating. Play enough club to get to the center for a chance at a par.

Hole #17 - Tee and hole location will dramatically dictate what club to hit on this long par 3. Slightly uphill, the hole is surrounded by hardwood trees and offers one of the largest greens on the golf course. Par here is a good score.

Hole #18 - The home hole is a gentle dogleg right par 4. The uphill drive is played through trees and favors a left to right shot to find the fairway. A strong accurate tee shot is crucial on this demanding finishing hole. The second shot, especially if played from either rough, is dominated by a large pond that borders the left side. Approach shots from the left side must carry the water. The generously sized green allows for a number of pin placements. A great finishing hole.
